Short Film: Paava Kadhaigal(PK) Short Film Review

This bunch of 4 dark, unconventional short films is very unique and special. All the films are very fresh because they are directed by mainstream filmmakers who wish to explore unusual themes that cannot be filmed for the money-driven film industry.

Pocket Cinema News

Thangam (T)

T directed by Sudha Kangara is the best of PK.

Story

Love and its after-effects of a transgender is the crux of the story.

Positives

I felt that this is a never seen before storyline in Tamil cinema. Sudha Kongra deserves a big round of applause for showcasing the sufferings of a transgender in a very realistic manner. Like in all Sudha’s movies the actors have not acted but have lived their part. The transgender character does not worry when she is body-shamed or insulted by the public but gets frustrated while her love is rejected. This is a very different take on the transgender characters we have come across in films. The entire story and screenplay are very engaging and emotional. All the technical aspects are brilliantly handled.

Negatives

This is one of the very few films in which I could not find anything negative. T- Shines like a gold

Love panna Uttranum (LPU)

LPU is the odd one out. This one is very different from the other 3 films of PK.

Story

It is about the love stories of twin sisters and their father’s reaction to it.

Positives

This is a slightly comic take on a serious issue. Vignesh shivan excels with his trademark punch dialogues throughout the film. The unusual yet apt selection of actors for certain roles is commendable. All actors have done their best. Comedy has worked out in this serious film. LPU has a different story with an engaging screenplay. Technical aspects are also sound.

Negatives

The mindset of the father character though convincing for most of the part is sometimes confusing or illogical. LPU- Different

Vaanmagal (V)

V is the simplest of the other 3 films of PK.

Story

The pain and sufferings of a tragic incident experienced by a little girl.

Positives

Like his production ventures such as Maa and Lakshmi Gautham Vasudev Menon (GVM) has efficiently handled this theme. Simran after a long time has given a touching performance. All the other actors have also done a good job. The film was engaging for most of the part. Technical aspects were also good.

Negatives

Goutham’s acting was adequate in some portions but was not up to the mark in certain portions. In a scene where the son's character cries tears were not seen, so the particular scene seemed to be artificial. The storyline was very thin. So the duration of the film could have been shorter. V- Does not meet the GVM standards.

Oor Iravu (OI)

OI is the first short film from Vetrimaran and is a good attempt.

Story

The return of an eloped daughter to her hometown and its consequences forms the plot of OI.

Positives

The smart decision of Vetrimaran to tell a simple story through an altered screenplay is commendable. Sai Pallavi's and Prakash raj’s acting were extraordinary. All the other actors have also done a splendid job. The tension that is built throughout the film using silence had worked out very well. The story and screenplay are neatly structured. Technical aspects enhance the tension in the screenplay.

Negatives

OI gives a sense of incompleteness at the end. OI- As Vetri Maran is new to short film making, it seems like he has not given his best for OI.
